Who is the best dressed San Franciscan?
Anh Sundstrom (21%, 462 Votes)
The best dressed San Franciscan has to be living and either be a current resident of San Francisco, or someone who has especially strong ties to the city. They don't need to be super famous, but we want people who have contact with the public through their jobs or personal interests. Please don't nominate yourself, a close friend, a client or someone you've been hired to provide with public relations.
None of these people asked to be nominated most have no idea they were chosen until today. Most if not all are really nice people. This is a fun exercise, not Fashion Police. So please be kind in the comments.
Most important: Thank you to The Chronicle's Laura Compton, Carolyne Zinko, Tony Bravo, Angela Salazar, Maghan McDowell, Leah Garchik and Kitty Morgan for their Style expertise. I asked them to give me a few names, and they gave this exercise a lot of thought.
Bios for each contestant are below
James Sime of Isotope Comics. Small wonder his personal style is as quirky as the twists and turns his life has taken. Carolyne Zinko
Willie Brown:God knows he doesn't need any more exposure. (And as far as I'm concerned, it's the Emperor Norton Bridge west of Treasure Island.) But like Norton, the former San Francisco mayor and California Assembly speaker is a fearless, impeccable dresser. You can go back as far as the early 1960s, when Brown came on the political scene, and the politician has always had a fashion confidence that matched his political swagger. A no brainer for this list. Peter Hartlaub
Ken Fulk:What's an interior designer to do, to set himself apart? Fulk, whose aesthetic tends toward the eccentric (mash ups of antiques, taxidermy and modern art), also takes liberties with his attire. He cuts a memorable impression in everything from suits made of camouflage patterned fabric to Edwardian style get ups to a tailcoat with riding pants and boots for the nights when he serves as ringmaster at theatrical fundraising parties for hundreds of guests at his SoMa studio. Carolyne Zinko
Vanessa Getty:The Pacific Heights philanthropist was the only San Francisco Bay Area resident to make Vanity Fair's International Best Dressed List for 2014. She's as comfortable in sweats, working with the Peninsula Humane Society as she is in a Gucci dress at a charity luncheon or a Valentino gown on gala night. She tends toward body conscious attire and told Vanity Fair her style icon is Charlotte Rampling. Carolyne Zinko
Yurie Pascarella: This equestrian spends many afternoons riding in the North Bay, but as a San Francisco arts patron, her nighttime garb is a horse of a different color. With a precision cut bob setting the tone for sleek, tailored, fuss free gowns at black tie opening nights for the San Francisco Symphony and Ballet, Pascarella is red carpet royalty. Nancy Pelosi: As the only woman ever to have served as Speaker of the House, Pelosi knows that a woman holding a powerful position carries not only the weight of the job, but the double standard of having to care more about her looks than a man does (without appearing to have obsessed about them). On Capitol Hill, Pelosi wears well cut designer pant suits, both dignified and professional. By sticking to a consistent uniform (and hairdo), she makes her looks a non issue, something other women in politics tend to ignore, at their own peril. And she can rock a ball gown, too, as evidenced by her regular attendance at arts gala openings. Carolyne Zinko
Charlotte Shultz: Owing to the decades of her high society life, her high profile marriages and her many years as chief of protocol for San Francisco and the state of California, it may be hard to find someone who has dressed with aplomb for a wider variety of occasions than Shultz. She's worn sueded fringe at a cowboy themed engagement party (and learned to rope), designer skirt suits to meet heads of state, and even a Wonder Woman outfit for a performance of Beach Blanket Babylon attended by Prince Charles and Camilla in 2004. We defy you to top that. Carolyne Zinko
James Sime:The owner of Isotope Comics in Hayes Valley perfectly blends his personal and professional life, crafting a larger than life fashion persona. His goatee and spiked hairdo resemble a hero or villain in one of the comics he sells. But Bulgari bracelet fake
his trademark is an array of flashy and fun vintage suits Sime doesn't own a bvlgari b zero1 diamond ring replica
pair of jeans, and even has a suit he wears when working on his Ford Mustang. Peter Hartlaub
Norah and Norman Stone: This married pair of modern art collectors take their acquisitions seriously, but wear their style irreverently and whimsically on their sleeves. He is as comfortable partying (shirtless) in a vest made of clear plastic bubble wrap and a pair of slacks bvlgari b zero diamond ring imitation
as he is wearing a rose patterned Gucci tuxedo and silver Martin Margiela shoes. She highlights her hair with six colors of red (and blond) and is unafraid to top it with an ostrich feathered hat or a chapeau replicating the architectural atrium of San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art. Sundstrom specializes in pulling together everyday ensembles for ultra modern working women. to our inboxes and Instagram feeds on the regular. Angela Salazar
Nate Thurmond:"Big Nate" was a legendary rebounder by day, and a legendary fashion plate by night. Despite being a hard to shop for 6 feet 11 inches, he may be the best dressed Golden State Warriors player in history equally comfortable courtside at a game or playing croquet in front of City Hall. Now in his early 70s, Thurmond continues to dress sharp, setting a good example for the next generation. Peter Hartlaub
